QUEEN IDA

EPISODES OF AMERICAN ROUTES WITH QUEEN IDA

FROM THE SHOW: MOTHER'S DAY

Born Ida Lewis, "Queen Ida" brings a woman's presence to Louisiana zydeco music. Ida describes growing up in a family where a girl wasn't allowed to play the accordion but how, at age 42, after raising three children of her own, she took to stage and became the Queen of zydeco accordion.

NATIONAL HERITAGE FELLOWSHIP CONCERT AND CELEBRATION

Live from the Nation's Capital, it's the 2009 National Heritage Fellowship Concert. Each year, the National Endowment for the Arts recognizes citizens for their contributions to our nation's traditional arts. We'll hear from this year's honorees, including zydeco's Queen Ida, the gospel group The Birmingham Sunlights and Puerto Rican cuatro genius Edwin Colon Zayas. Plus visits with an array of previous National Heritage Fellows, from B.B. King to Earl Scruggs.

Also, music from Queen Mothers in jazz, blues and soul, including Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and Aretha.
