Coming up near Detroit, LaVette's family operated a lounge and sold corn liquor to visiting gospel groups, as near to the church as she wanted to be. Her 1963 debut single on Atlantic, "My Man--He's a Loving Man," was the singer's biggest hit. Recording at Muscle Shoals, LaVette made a number of sides that went on to become southern soul classics. In 2005, after a long hiatus, LaVette resurfaced with a new CD, I've Got My Own Hell to Raise.
