Known as the Soul Queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas was actually born outside the city in Pontchatoula. At age 20 she signed with the Minit label, in 1962 cutting "It's Raining," followed soon after with "Ruler of My Heart." Thomas continued to record through the '70s to lesser success and took several years hiatus before making the first of a succession of soul and gospel recordings for the Rounder label bringing her back into the spotlight with great acclaim.

REMEMBERING ALLEN TOUSSAINT: A SAINT FOR ALL SEASONS

We celebrate the songmaker, piano "professor" and producer from New Orleans who passed away suddenly in November 2015. A beloved Creole gentleman, Allen Toussaint was a hometown hero and giant on the American music scene. He wrote over 800 songs and produced regional and national hit records such as "Java" (Al Hirt), "Mother-in-Law" (Ernie K-Doe), "I Like it Like That" (Chris Kenner), "It's Raining" (Irma Thomas), "Yes We Can" (Lee Dorsey) among others. Toussaint worked closely with the Meters, Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello. He is in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and received the National Medal of Arts. Allen Toussaint's famed autobiographical song is "Southern Nights."

KATRINA: 10 YEARS AFTER THE FLOOD

How has New Orleans fared in the decade since the levee breaks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina? Trying to answer the question, we listen back to the music and musicians who helped the city's culture to stay afloat, including Allen Toussaint and Irma Thomas. Also scenes from the Superdome roof, where workers repaired of a 9.7 acre hole, and Cajun musicians Michael and David Doucet on a 100 years of hurricanes. Finally humorist Harry Shearer and Creole bandleader Deacon John talk today about their hopes for New Orleans' tomorrow, as the landscape of culture and economy changes.

AFTER THE STORM IX: KATRINA'S SECOND ANNIVERSARY

Two years after levee failure submerged much of New Orleans, we walk through the streets of the city with an eye towards rebuilding and repopulating. Irma Thomas, the Soul Queen of New Orleans, leads us through the renovations of her once-devastated home and the recording of her Grammy-winning post-Katrina album. Join in the second line as we take you to a street parade with New Orleans' own James Andrews and members of the Rebirth Brass Band. Finally, celebrate on stage with the oldest-working New Orleans musician as trumpeter and retired tinsmith Lionel Ferbos makes 96!

AFTER THE STORM VIII: A YEAR IN THE FLOOD'S WAKE

It's a reflection on New Orleans and the Gulf South, one year after the Flood of '05. We've got an interview and live performance from historic Congo Square with New Orleans native and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Visit with the men repairing the Superdome. And Louisiana voices, including Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, and David and Michael Doucet recall their storm experiences. The words and music of post-deluge New Orleans, one year after the storm.

AFTER THE STORM IV: THANKSGIVING

This week we continue to follow the rebuilding of the Gulf Region through the stories and songs of its musicians. Joining in the recovery effort is the soul queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas, to talk about her life, post-Katrina. Plus, we'll go into the studio with Michael and David Doucet, brothers and members of the Cajun band Beausoleil for their take on some storm songs.
