REMEMBERING ALLEN TOUSSAINT: A SAINT FOR ALL SEASONS

We celebrate the songmaker, piano "professor" and producer from New Orleans who passed away suddenly in November 2015. A beloved Creole gentleman, Allen Toussaint was a hometown hero and giant on the American music scene. He wrote over 800 songs and produced regional and national hit records such as "Java" (Al Hirt), "Mother-in-Law" (Ernie K-Doe), "I Like it Like That" (Chris Kenner), "It's Raining" (Irma Thomas), "Yes We Can" (Lee Dorsey) among others. Toussaint worked closely with the Meters, Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello. He is in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and received the National Medal of Arts. Allen Toussaint's famed autobiographical song is "Southern Nights."

HALLOWS AND HARVEST: AMERICAN ROUTES HALLOWEEN SPECIAL

It's Halloween... a time of spirit and flesh, tricks and treats. We'll hear from Houma Indian carver and instrument-maker, Ivy Billiot, about rougarou-- or werewolves -- and the spirit world. Then Bentonia bluesman Jimmy "Duck" Holmes tells us about the devil in daily life. Also songs about murder and mayhem, and beings from beyond the stars... and beyond the grave. Plus music from Dr. John and Memphis Minnie, Hank Williams and Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

KINGPINS OF THE GULF COAST: RODNEY CROWELL & DR. JOHN

The Houston-born singer/songwriter Rodney Crowell talks about growing up on the rough side of town with the ghost of Hank Williams as a "family member," as well writing songs for his recent duet partner Emmylou Harris. He also wrote for many of the country heavy weights from Jerry Reed to Guy Clark and Bob Seeger, and was also the antagonist in Rosanne Cash's signature tune "Seven Year Ache." Then we'll sit down live in a rare visit to Nashville (!) with the Crescent City's Nite Tripper himself Dr. John, who reminisces about and demonstrates his early days at the piano, and on a music industry "spying mission" that could only happen in New Orleans.

THE EMPEROR AND THE PROFESSOR OF NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: ERNIE K-DOE & PROFESSOR LONGHAIR

We recall two grand figures of New Orleans music beginning with Ernie K-Doe, the surreal soul man of catchy songs, and flamboyant antics in New Orleans R&B. Ben Sandmel who wrote Ernie K-Doe: The R&B Emperor of New Orleans joins the carnivalesque conversation. Then a piano tribute to Professor Longhair by Dr. John, Jon Cleary and George Porter, live from the legendary New Orleans club Tipitina's, named after Longhair's most famous song. We also play the original recordings with commentary from Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, producer Jerry Wexler, and studio recordist Cosimo Matassa.

We recall two grand figures of New Orleans music beginning with Ernie K-Doe, the surreal soul man of catchy songs, and flamboyant antics in New Orleans R&B, from his hit "Mother-in-Law" to the "Burn K-Doe Burn" approach to his local radio show and serving as host and main attraction of his and wife Antoinette's Mother-in-Law Lounge. THE EMPEROR AND THE PROFESSOR OF NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: ERNIE K-DOE & PROFESSOR LONGHAIR

This week we recall two grand figures of New Orleans music. First, Ernie K-Doe, the surreal soul man known for his catchy songs, and flamboyant antics in New Orleans R&B, from his hit "Mother-in-Law" to serving as host and main attraction of his and wife Antoinette's Mother-in-Law Lounge. Then a piano tribute to Professor Longhair by Dr. John, Jon Cleary and George Porter, live from the legendary New Orleans club Tipitina's, named after Longhair's most famous song. We also play the original recordings with commentary from Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Jerry Wexler, and Cosimo Matassa.

SINGING AND SWINGING THE ELECTION 2008

American Routes gets out the vote with music by, for and of the people. Lend your ears to the democratic process as we bring you music to get you to the polls, from protest songs to patriotic anthems. Dr. John shares his views on the politics of music and the state of the nation while Tennessee Senator and piano man Lamar Alexander tells tales of the campaign trail. Plus, Virginia banjo legend Ralph Stanley reveals a surprising endorsement and presidential candidate El Vez, the Mexican Elvis, stops by to ask for our vote.

AFTER THE STORM X: DOG DAYS OF AUGUST

It's hurricane season on the Gulf Coast. To commemorate it we gather songs made post-Katrina and Rita... as well as some enduring classics. Dr. John makes a soapbox of his piano and speaks out in song against the governmental missteps following our country's greatest unnatural disaster. New Orleans jazz clarinetist Dr. Michael White joins us to talk about his new songs in traditional style made following the loss of his home and musical instruments to the flood. Plus the huge influx of talented outsiders is revealed in interviews with New Yorkers who have, post-storm, become New Orleanians--what brought them to and keeps them in the Crescent City.

NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: R&B, ROOTS ROCK AND SOUL, GOSPEL AND FUNK

Jazz may have been born here, but by the 1950s the music of choice in New Orleans was rhythm & blues. Local talent topped the charts with songs like "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", "The Fat Man" and "Working in the Coalmine". We'll talk to many key figures in New Orleans R&B, from hitmakers like Lloyd Price, Dr. John, and Aaron Neville and producers Allen Toussaint and Harold Battiste, to bandleader Dave Bartholomew and musicians like drummer Earl Palmer. Plus music recorded in New Orleans' legendary J&M Studios by Little Richard, Fats Domino and Professor Longhair, and funk, jazz, pop and soul along the way.

COOL II

"Cool"--it's one of those words that's difficult to define, but you know it when you hear it. Join us as some of our favorite folks expound on the meaning of "cool," and play some really cool music--Tom Waits, Dave Brubeck, Solomon Burke, Carol Fran, Dr. John and lots more. Plus, there's interviews with a couple of guys that definitely fit the cool criteria: "In Crowd" member and pianist Ramsey Lewis, and alto saxophonist Lee Konitz.

DR JOHN / PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND

Sit down and visit with the Crescent City piano professor and hoodoo rock and roller Dr. John as he recalls his early days in as a studio guitarist in New Orleans and the West Coast birth of the Night Tripper. And tag along as we drop by the place where time stands still, but the music jumps, Preservation Hall. Meet musicians, fans and the family that started it all.

OFF THE RECORD

It's a trip to the American Routes archives as we bring you outtakes, missteps and live performances from Bonnie Raitt, Bo Diddley, Ralph Stanley, Dr. John, and others. Plus live music cuts from Willie Nelson, the legendary Flatlanders and Cajun teen band Feufollet.
