EPISODES OF AMERICAN ROUTES WITH CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE

FROM THE SHOW: BLACKS, WHITES, BLUES AND COUNTRY: CHARLEY PRIDE AND CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE

Born into a working-class family in Kosciusko, Mississippi, Charlie Musselwhite's family relocated to Memphis where he learned blues harmonica from legends like Furry Lewis and Will Shade. Moving to Chicago in the '50s, Musselwhite heard and played with all the post-war blues greats plus recording his own South Side Band. He relocated to the West Coast in the '60s and continues to maintains his position as the most credible, organic member of the '60s white blues/rock movement.

MODERN TRADITIONS: BEN HARPER AND CARL LEBLANC

The singer-songwriter Ben Harper has been on the scene since the early '90s, but has more recently been digging deeper into the blues with the legendary harpman Charlie Musselwhite. We'll talk with Ben about the musical journey from his family's music store to what he calls his "graduation" album. Then an in-studio conversation with a guitarist who has played with Sun Ra and now plays banjo with Preservation Hall, New Orleans' own Carl LeBlanc.

THE BEST OF AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE IN STUDIO AND ON STAGE

This holiday weekend, we've hand picked some of the best live performances on American Routes. From Willie Nelson in our studio to soul queen Irma Thomas and other roots music heroes at Rock N Bowl, Preservation Hall and the Civic Theater in New Orleans. We feature blues harpist Charlie Musselwhite, Baton Rouge blues pianist, Henry Gray, New Orleans traditional jazz clarinetist Dr. Michael White and Topsy Chapman. Plus the Cajun band Beausoleil and zydeco accordionist Geno Delafose. And, from the Smithsonian Folklife Festival: Los Texmaniacs and the Chuck Brown Go-Go band. So, turn on the radio and take a break from work (just two hours) for American Routes!
