ALLEN TOUSSAINT: A SAINT FOR ALL SEASONS

We celebrate the songmaker, piano "professor" and producer from New Orleans who passed away suddenly in November, 2015. A beloved Creole gentleman, Allen Toussaint was a hometown hero and giant on the American music scene. He wrote over 800 songs and produced regional and national hit records such as "Java" (Al Hirt), "Mother-in-Law" (Ernie K-Doe), "I Like it Like That" (Chris Kenner), "It's Raining" (Irma Thomas), "Yes We Can" (Lee Dorsey) among others. Toussaint worked closely with the Meters, Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello. He is in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and received the National Medal of Arts. Allen Toussaint's famed autobiographical song is "Southern Nights."

THE EMPEROR AND THE PROFESSOR OF NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: ERNIE K-DOE & PROFESSOR LONGHAIR

We recall two grand figures of New Orleans music beginning with Ernie K-Doe, the surreal soul man of catchy songs, and flamboyant antics in New Orleans R&B. Ben Sandmel who wrote Ernie K-Doe: The R&B Emperor of New Orleans joins the carnivalesque conversation. Then a piano tribute to Professor Longhair by Dr. John, Jon Cleary and George Porter, live from the legendary New Orleans club Tipitina's, named after Longhair's most famous song. We also play the original recordings with commentary from Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, producer Jerry Wexler, and studio recordist Cosimo Matassa.

KATRINA: 10 YEARS AFTER THE FLOOD

How has New Orleans fared in the decade since the levee breaks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina? Trying to answer the question, we listen back to the music and musicians who helped the city's culture to stay afloat, including Allen Toussaint and Irma Thomas. Also scenes from the Superdome roof, where workers repaired of a 9.7 acre hole, and Cajun musicians Michael and David Doucet on a 100 years of hurricanes. Finally humorist Harry Shearer and Creole bandleader Deacon John talk today about their hopes for New Orleans' tomorrow, as the landscape of culture and economy changes.

THE EMPEROR AND THE PROFESSOR OF NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: ERNIE K-DOE & PROFESSOR LONGHAIR

This week we recall two grand figures of New Orleans music. First, Ernie K-Doe, the surreal soul man known for his catchy songs, and flamboyant antics in New Orleans R&B, from his hit "Mother-in-Law" to serving as host and main attraction of his and wife Antoinette's Mother-in-Law Lounge. Then a piano tribute to Professor Longhair by Dr. John, Jon Cleary and George Porter, live from the legendary New Orleans club Tipitina's, named after Longhair's most famous song. We also play the original recordings with commentary from Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Jerry Wexler, and Cosimo Matassa.

SAINTS ALIVE: AFTER THE STORM XI

This week we commemorate the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in music and conversation with piano professor Allen Toussaint, who shares his thoughts about the recovery of his beloved city and his recent turn toward New Orleans jazz classics on his release The Bright Mississippi. Then, up and coming jazz trumpeter and Lower 9th Ward native Shamarr Allen stops by the American Routes studios to tell of his life both before and after the storm, as well as his hopes for his hometown. Plus music and songs that reflect our shared sense of loss for what has gone, and that celebrate the continuing recovery of the Crescent City.

NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: R&B, ROOTS ROCK AND SOUL, GOSPEL AND FUNK

Jazz may have been born here, but by the 1950s the music of choice in New Orleans was rhythm & blues. Local talent topped the charts with songs like "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", "The Fat Man" and "Working in the Coalmine". We'll talk to many key figures in New Orleans R&B, from hitmakers like Lloyd Price, Dr. John, and Aaron Neville and producers Allen Toussaint and Harold Battiste, to bandleader Dave Bartholomew and musicians like drummer Earl Palmer. Plus music recorded in New Orleans' legendary J&M Studios by Little Richard, Fats Domino and Professor Longhair, and funk, jazz, pop and soul along the way.

ELVIS COSTELLO & ALLEN TOUSSAINT PLUS THE KITCHEN SISTERS

Meet two men of great musical distinction--New Orleans songman and piano player Allen Toussaint and his longtime fan and current collaborator Elvis Costello--who tell us about recording in post-Katrina New Orleans. Plus a tour of some famous New Orleans restaurants by none other than Nikki Silva and Davia Nelson, better known as the Kitchen Sisters. The pair take us to two kitchens of two sisters, apiece--that makes six in all.

AFTER THE STORM VIII: A YEAR IN THE FLOOD'S WAKE

It's a reflection on New Orleans and the Gulf South, one year after the Flood of '05. We've got an interview and live performance from historic Congo Square with New Orleans native and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Visit with the men repairing the Superdome. And Louisiana voices, including Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, and David and Michael Doucet recall their storm experiences. The words and music of post-deluge New Orleans, one year after the storm.

AFTER THE STORM V: OUR NEW ORLEANS

New Orleans is a city and a concept, dear to folks worldwide, maybe more so now than ever. American Routes does its part to keep spirits high and focused on the city's rebirth with a visit from the always dapper piano professor Allen Toussaint and members of the group that best embodies the city's musical legacy, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
