Charley Pride was born in Sledge, Mississippi but left behind farm life for a minor league baseball career and work in a Montana steel mill. The singer recorded 36 number one hits and won 3 Grammys, making him the most successful African-American country performer ever. Still touring after 4 decades, Charley Pride resides in Dallas and owns the tenant farm in Sledge on which he was raised.
