DOWNHOME MUSIC OF ARHOOLIE RECORDS
We're celebrating Arhoolie Records, the Berkeley, CA based record company devoted to roots music: blues and jazz, Mexican and Cajun, gospel and country. Join us for a live concert, from the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse, with the pioneering label's many admirers including Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal, Michael & David Doucet of Beausoleil, New Orleans' Treme Brass Band and sacred steel masters, the Campbell Brothers. We'll also chat with Arhoolie's founder, the late Chris Strachwitz about his passion for American roots music on record.
MEN OF STEEL AND SOUL: THE CAMPBELL BROTHERS AND WALTER WOLFMAN WASHINGTON
We're bringing the blues from the clubs to the church this week on American Routes. The Campbell Brothers, from Rochester, NY, are masters of sacred steel. With both pedal and lap steel guitars, they summon the spirit in voice and sound. We'll talk about growing up in the church and playing gospel blues on the guitar. Then, New Orleans bluesman Walter “Wolfman" Washington stops by the American Routes studio for a conversation about his life in the music and in the clubs around town.
MEMORIAL DAY WITH THE NEA NATIONAL HERITAGE FELLOWS: MICHAEL WHITE, BEAUSOLEIL, MONK BOUDREAUX, DEL MCCOURY, KOKO TAYLOR AND MANY MORE...
American Routes celebrates Memorial Day weekend with a sonic feast from National Endowment for the Arts' Heritage Fellows--recipients of America's most prestigious award in folk & traditional arts. We'll hear music and conversation from past Fellows: bluegrass picker Del McCoury, rockabilly Wanda Jackson, sacred steel guitarists, the Campbell Brothers, and late blues singer Koko Taylor. The 2016 Fellows included: Mardi Gras Indian Chief Monk Boudreaux, Irish accordionist Billy McComiskey and Mexican-American singer Artemio Posadas. Other awardees range from basketmakers in Kentucky and the Penobscot tribe in Maine, to traditional wind instrumentalists from South Dakota and Laos.
