NEW ORLEANS NEW YEARS LIVE

It's time to celebrate the New Year with live music from the French Quarter including the Rebirth Brass Band, jazz with Leroy Jones and Ellis Marsalis, Little Freddie King's country blues, funk from Jon Cleary and songs from Charmaine Neville. Start the New Year right with American Routes.

BLUES--THE UNIVERSAL SOLVENT & LITTLE FREDDIE KING LIVE

Blues...it's a universal solvent in music. There's blues in jazz, R & B, roots rock and soul, country, Cajun, Latin, funk, hip-hop, rock and pop... It's everywhere! We'll hear from all corners of the musical map including Bessie Smith, Buddy Guy, Freddy Fender and Clifton Chenier and more. Then an hour with Octogenarian electric country blues man Little Freddie King live from Marigny Studios in New Orleans.

LIVING WITH THE BLUES

This week on American Routes, we're roaming the highways, byways and crossroads of the Magnolia State, looking for all kinds of blues. We sit down with noted blues scholar Bill Ferris to talk about his lifelong obsession with the music of his home state, and visit with Delta piano blues chanteuse Eden Brent to learn about her music mentor Boogaloo Ames. We set out north for Holly Springs and some Hill Country family jams. Then we head towards home to hang out at Teddy's Juke Joint, and catch up with the master of the gut-bucket blues, Little Freddie King.

MUSIC OF HEALING & ELIXIRS: LITTLE FREDDIE KING, ANDERS OSBORNE, DR. MICHAEL WHITE & MUSIC MAKER RELIEF FOUNDATION

From healing songs and expressions of pain to hoodoo cure-alls and feel-good elixirs, we explore the musical world of sickness and health. We talk with Mississippi-born guitarist Little Freddie King about how the blues saved many of his nine lives. New Orleans songwriter and rocker Anders Osborne tells of a journey that led to self-medicating with pain relievers that do more harm than good, and his eventual recovery. Tim Duffy of the Music Maker Relief Foundation in North Carolina explains the curative properties of music on society and his work with Taj Mahal to help deep-roots musicians in need. And clarinetist Dr. Michael White talks of jazz and its role in his and New Orleans' recovery after Katrina. Plus, medicine show troubadours hawk their tonics, Dr. John prescribes Mama Roux's healing potions, and Huey "Piano" Smith gives us a serious case of "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu."

AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE! THE METERS, DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS, AND BATON ROUGE BLUES FESTIVAL

Time for some "Fire on the Bayou" at a rare reunion of New Orleans' funk jam band and studio wizards, The Meters -- Art Neville, keyboards; Leo Nocentelli, guitar; Zigaboo Modeliste, drums; and George Porter Jr., bass -- on stage at the Howlin' Wolf club. Then Drive-By Truckers, fronted by songmen/guitarists Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood, bring their poetic and critical style of Southern rock a la Muscle Shoals, Alabama to New Orleans' historic Civic Theatre. Finally we roll 80 miles upriver to the Baton Rouge Blues Festival, featuring dapper Mississippian Little Freddie King; Louisiana swamp blues guitarist Lil Buck Sinegal; Creole zydeco accordionist Jeffery Broussard; and Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens from New York. Turn on, tune in and chill out!

AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE!: MUSICAL GEOGRAPHIES OF THE GULF SOUTH

American Routes celebrates music and musicians from New Orleans, Mississippi and French Louisiana. Recorded live at New Orleans' venerable (1906) Civic Theatre, the show features New Orleans clarinetist Dr. Michael White and the Original Liberty Jazz Band with the definitive Creole music born in the Crescent City: traditional jazz. White is joined by fellow NEA Heritage recipient, Cajun fiddler Michael Doucet and the influential band of the French Louisiana cultural revival BeauSoleil ('good sunshine'). The downhome blues of guitarist and wordslinger Little Freddie King of McComb, Mississippi kicks off the show and the spirit-filled gospel of Electrifying Crown Seekers from New Orleans' West Bank take us home. Our special guest is beloved jazz vocalist Topsy Chapman, also famed locally as the first black cocktail waitress on Bourbon Street in the 1960s.

WORDS & MUSIC V

Do the words make the song or the notes? What does it take to tell a good tale in music or about music? We put those questions to a few writers of both songs and stories. Singer-songwriter and memoirist Rosanne Cash sits down before a live audience to tell us about her authorial journey, then we chat with novelist Cyril Vetter on translating a musician's life into fiction. And New Orleans bluesman Little Freddie King spins a few tall tales from the juke joint.
