JULY 4TH: SOUL OF AMERICA

Who better to supply an all-American 4th of July soundtrack than our humble citizen selves? This year, we'll meet two soulful gentlemen who could only have come from the good ol' USA. Smokey Robinson talks about his voice and his timeless Motown singles with the Miracles, as well as the songs he wrote and produced for others: like "My Guy" for Mary Wells and the Temptations' "My Girl." And meet Mr. Wiggles, the king of Richmond, Virginia's "Fatback Sound." Also craftsman Charles Gillam who carves blues history out of Mississippi River driftwood. It's a red, white, and blues Independence Day... may the Fourth be with you!

WORDS - STEVE EARLE

Sounds of the South in words and music: The Tennessee Williams Festival... add your voice to the Stella-calling contest (friends and family of Marlon Brando are prohibited from participating). Also, a talk with country singer Steve Earle about his life and the songwriter's craft, and music from Smokey Robinson, Skip James, Leonard Cohen, Dinah Washington and William S. Burroughs.

CIRCUS & MARDI GRAS

Step right up for our Greatest Show on Earth as we go to the circus in songs and sounds. Carousels, sideshows and the Big Top with music from Chet Baker, Smokey Robinson and Patsy Cline. We'll also talk with retired circus workers in the wintering grounds of Sarasota, Florida. And do the Mardi Gras mambo to a parade of sounds celebrating Fat Tuesday.
