FROM THE SHOW: JELLY ROLL MORTON

Fiddler Michael Doucet reflects on Cajun music's remarkable popularity and the beginnings of his band Beausoleil in the mid-1970's. Doucet started playing traditional music, seeking out local Southwest Louisiana influences like Dennis McGee and Varise Connor.

AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE!: MUSICAL GEOGRAPHIES OF THE GULF SOUTH

American Routes celebrates music and musicians from New Orleans, Mississippi and French Louisiana. Recorded live at New Orleans' venerable (1906) Civic Theatre, the show features New Orleans clarinetist Dr. Michael White and the Original Liberty Jazz Band with the definitive Creole music born in the Crescent City: traditional jazz. White is joined by fellow NEA Heritage recipient, Cajun fiddler Michael Doucet and the influential band of the French Louisiana cultural revival BeauSoleil ('good sunshine'). The downhome blues of guitarist and wordslinger Little Freddie King of McComb, Mississippi kicks off the show and the spirit-filled gospel of Electrifying Crown Seekers from New Orleans' West Bank take us home. Our special guest is beloved jazz vocalist Topsy Chapman, also famed locally as the first black cocktail waitress on Bourbon Street in the 1960s.

NEA HERITAGE AWARDS

It's a tradition of it's own by now! Each year, American Routes celebrates Thanksgiving weekend with words and music from the National Heritage Fellows Concert in Washington DC. Since 1982, the National Endowment for the Arts has presented the fellowships. It's America's highest award in Folk & Traditional Arts. We'll hear a mix of this year's fellows live from the stage as well as great recordings of those from years gone by: The Holmes Brothers, Doc Watson, Treme Brass Band, Michael Doucet with Beausoleil, Boozoo Chavis, Flaco Jimenez, Mavis Staples, Del McCoury, John Cephas & Phil Wiggins, Andy Statman and many more. Blues and jazz, Cajun and zydeco, Tejano and klezmer, bluegrass and gospel as well as Native American voices, make a cornucopia of sounds and stories for the holiday!

AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE! 4TH OF JULY: CELEBRATING MUSICAL GEOGRAPHIES OF THE GULF SOUTH

50 YEARS OF ARHOOLIE RECORDS

It's the 50th anniversary concert of the legendary Arhoolie Records and we're bringing the party to you live from Berkeley's Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse. Nick is joined on stage with the pioneering label's many admirers including roots rock guitarist Ry Cooder, bluesman Taj Mahal, Michael Doucet of Beausoleil, New Orleans' Treme Brass Band, sacred steel masters the Campbell Brothers, the Mexican-American traditionalists Los Cenzontles and many special guests. We'll also chat with Arhoolie's founder, Chris Strachwitz about his passion for putting American roots music on record.

AFTER THE STORM VIII: A YEAR IN THE FLOOD'S WAKE

It's a reflection on New Orleans and the Gulf South, one year after the Flood of '05. We've got an interview and live performance from historic Congo Square with New Orleans native and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Visit with the men repairing the Superdome. And Louisiana voices, including Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, and David and Michael Doucet recall their storm experiences. The words and music of post-deluge New Orleans, one year after the storm.
