EPISODES OF AMERICAN ROUTES WITH BONNIE RAITT

FROM THE SHOW: THE FOLK REVIVAL REVISITED: PETE SEEGER, JUDY COLLINS, JIM KWESKIN, JERRY GARCIA, JOAN BAEZ, AND MORE

From the show "The Folk Revival Revisited: Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Jim Kweskin, Jerry Garcia, Joan Baez, and more" originally aired on March 16th, 2016

FROM THE SHOW: DIVAS?

Blues singer and guitarist Bonnie Raitt talks about her career as a woman musician in the blues and remembers singing with her hero Sippie Wallace.

THE FOLK REVIVAL REVISITED: PETE SEEGER, JUDY COLLINS, JIM KWESKIN, JERRY GARCIA, ALAN LOMAX, RAMBLIN' JACK ELLIOTT, JOAN BAEZ, BONNIE RAITT AND MORE

The American folk music revival that grew from the Post-WWII era to the Sixties was about more than just music: it wrapped in political activism, romantic visions of the self and the "folk," group "sing-a-longs," "hootenannies" and careers of singer-songwriters. We interview folk heroine Judy Collins about her move from traditional British folk songs to the new songs and sounds in Greenwich Village. Jug bandleader Jim Kweskin talks about his love of communal living. The late Pete Seeger and Alan Lomax offer opinions on their divergent views of folk music and the quest for authenticity. Jerry Garcia tells of his most influential folk music source and we'll hear Dylan go electric at Newport in 1965. Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops talks about bringing back the peoples' music of another era today.

BILLIE HOLIDAY: LADIES SING THE BLUES & BEYOND--WITH SINGERS CASSANDRA WILSON AND CATHERINE RUSSELL

We follow Billie Holiday from her beginnings through a complex life of troubles and musical triumphs, her compelling "autumn" voice and untimely passing at age 44. Biographers John Szwed and Robert O'Meally discuss Lady Day's style and significance, while Cassandra Wilson describes and sings her approach to the Billie Holiday oeuvre. Singer Catherine Russell describes reaching back to recreate classic blues and jazz. From our archives we hear Nina Simone and Bonnie Raitt praising their blues heroines in story and song.

SONGS OF THE EXPATRIATES: RICHARD THOMPSON & ZACHARY RICHARD

This week on American Routes, we'll talk to the beloved electric and eclectic, folk rocker songwriter and guitarist Richard Thompson. An advocate for British lyric and music tradition in new settings with refashioned traditional songs and stories like "Matty Groves" and "Tam Lin," Thompson evolved from playing in the seminal late 1960s English folk-rock band, Fairport Convention to his present day role as an in-demand guitarist and songwriter. Now based in Los Angeles, Richard's career of memorable songs and epicure guitar is heard in a variety of genres from Cajun and country to rock and pop. Thompson's iconic songs include "Meet on the Ledge," "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," "Dimming of the Day" and "Tear Stained Letter." Among the artists who have recorded his work are Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Del McCoury and R.E.M.
Then we'll visit with accordion-man Zachary Richard about growing up in French-speaking South Louisiana but needing to go to France and Quebec to realize the significance of the Cajun culture into which he was born. Zachary Richard's 40-year career reflects new ways with old Cajun waltzes and two steps, the R & B glow of near by New Orleans, American folk rock mixed with swamp pop, and elegiac new songs that draw on continental French, Quebecois and Acadian sources. Richard's recent "Le Fou" may be the first Americana record made largely in the French of his homeland: South Louisiana's Cajun country.

DIVAS?

What comes to mind when you hear the word Diva? We'll explore the meaning - and the sound - of that feminine term through our music mix, and through interviews with some high-minded women who give the word a good name: Bonnie Raitt, Abbey Lincoln and young chanteuse Norah Jones. Plus songs with men and women weighing in on the topic from Louis Jordan, Memphis Minnie, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone and more.

OFF THE RECORD

It's a trip to the American Routes archives as we bring you outtakes, missteps and live performances from Bonnie Raitt, Bo Diddley, Ralph Stanley, Dr. John, and others. Plus live music cuts from Willie Nelson, the legendary Flatlanders and Cajun teen band Feufollet.

OFF THE RECORD

We're digging through our files to bring you great stories and live performances that never made the air! Lost tapes of Bo Diddley, Bonnie Raitt, Ralph Stanley, Dr. John and more. Plus live music cuts from Willie Nelson, the legendary Flatlanders and Cajun teen band Feufollet.
